Theatricum Botanicum

August 3, 2024 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Prez Sez, Hey Songmakers, on August third, I hope some of you will join Sandy and I in supporting one of our favorite local arts venues and honoring one of our favorite and founding Songmakers.  I trace our club to the friendships formed among Almanac Singers Pete Seeger, Bess Hawes and Woody Guthrie in the 40s! Woody taught Bess to play the mandolin. When she moved here in 52, before starting The West Valley Guitar Group, which merged with Pete’s Friends playing in local parks as “Peoples Music West” to form our Songmakers, she hung out at Will Geers property and performance Venue, Theatricum Botanicum in Topanga Canyon. This was the Folk Music center of LA at that time, and the place where Woody found shelter from the storm of the blacklist. Theatricum has continued to host wonderful folk music concerts including “The Woody Guthrie Story” for as long as our club has been singing!   In one month, their annual fundraiser “Echoes in the Forest”, will present Woody with the “Will Geer Humanitarian Award” accepted by his grandson, Damon Guthrie!

At 6 PM Sandy and I will explore the lovely gardens and enjoy delicious foods and beverages, surrounded by music and other artistic offerings. At 7:30, we’ll enter the beautiful outdoor theatre to celebrate the influences of Woody Guthrie with Theatricum company members and surprise guests, including the legendary actor/singer Keith Carradine. I hope some of you will join us for a great evening of music and community! Tickets can be purchased here: https://theatricum.com/echoes-in-the-forest-annual-gala/
